weekend cliff notes

Friday Night
Had a busy evening. Started with my first 501 class improv show. I was awful. Easily my worst show. I don't know what it was but something was off. Probably because I haven't performed an improv show in quite sometime so I felt really really lost. (On a side note, I had a makeup class this evening and while I may have again not been funny, I did not feel "stuck" like I did on Friday night. Things were coming out of my mouth and I was actually talking...) And we're back. After the show, I picked up a sausage and pepper from a street fair. That made me mildly happier. It's nice to see street fair season coming back. Spring/Summer is coming, yay.
After that, I took the train to my buddy Steve's house to play some poker. That made me happier too. It was either the poker or the beers/cherry vodka I was drinking. Either way, I was making jokes - no doubt overcompensating for my hide-the-children disaster from earlier in the evening - and was actually kinda funny. It was about 1am when I finally figured out that we weren't playing a tournament but a cash game... I was kickin some major ass with some risky gambles because I was like, whatever, it's just tournament money - not knowing I could just cash out at anytime. duh. so much for ivy league education.
Saturday
Pretty lazy day. I was supposed to do laundry but I didn't. I just sat home and caught up with episodes of Eyes. Eyes is a nice fun joyride. Lots of witty banter, pretty solid storylines, and good character development going on. It's not heavily character-driven, like Lost, but it does have its moments. Tim Daly is a funny, cynical that I will pattern my life after. Except for the probably will eventually sleep with Laura Leighton thing. Which would be terrible for my marriage.

Call me...
I'm friggin rich.

Bet on the Kentucky Derby and lost by two horses. The most ridiculous thing was the winners and the payouts. I mean, someone out there just WANTS me to gamble because this year's Kentucky Derby, I think the one Kentucky Derby I've watched and put money on, yielded some of the most ridiculous payouts in history. With two longshots coming in first and second and another longshot coming in fourth, picking the top 4 winners yielded a payout of over $800,000 for a $1 bet. Here's the payout - unreal:

Giacomo's $102.60 return for a $2 win wager...
A $2 exacta paid $9,814.80 for those in the crowd of 156,435, the second largest in Derby history, fortunate enough to correctly predict the top two finishers.
The trio of Giacomo, Closing Argument and Afleet Alex rewarded $2 bettors with $133,134.80. Seven bettors had those three plus 29-1 Don't Get Mad in fourth place. That $1 superfecta was worth $864,253.50.

Saturday evening, I went up to my dad's house and had dinner there. Hung out with the family and my little nephew. Dang, he's cute. Like a cuddly koala bear. But not Australian.
Sunday
Had a lovely Mother's day with my mother. Took her out to a Chinese restaurant in Westchester and then went food shopping. We hung out at home again with the family and had some good quality time together.
That was the weekend. Today - found the old clip of Triumph the Comic Insult Dog just murdering Star Wars fans. Too damn funny. Enjoy it here - http://www.sickjokes.net/media/conan-sketch-triumphstarwars.wmv

nba championship

I really hope the Phoenix Suns don't win the NBA championship. They are a really good team, high octane offnse but there is something about them that bugs me. The fact that they are so crappy without Steve Nash. Of course, that's why Nash is the MVP because he creates so much for a bunch of big, basically one-dimensional players. He has to:

  • create room for Amare because he can only dunk
  • draw the defense in so Q Richardson and Joe Johnson can shoot

I really can't say anything about Shawn Marion because he is so awesome and can do anything he wants. But the rest of them are useless without Nash - just google Amare and the 2004 Summer Olympics. You probably won't find much because he was... hmm, USELESS. Let's hope the Spurs lock them down because even though they are fun to watch, it's sort of annoying.

seriously him...
on Monk

coming back home from Cage Match tonight - crossing the street, so close to home without anything majorly interesting happening on the way back until one of the cool guys in front of me heinously misquotes to his cool buddies the following:
'it puts the cream in the basket'...
proceeded by laughter from the other externally straight, but now so obviously metrosexual friends. "that was SO not lotion she was putting on, it was clearly some kind of night cream or anti-wrinkle formula". idiots. clearly they need to download this and put it on their ipod.

blabbity blah

Of course, I've again decided today that I need to write a comedic monologue. Here in New York, taking classes, auditioning - I started realizing how many freakin talented people there are in New York - doing so many things from acting, improv, directing, writing, playing music, everything. And everyone is doing it all to try to get an edge up. I would guess that that's one of the reasons why great talents come out of New York. Everyone is constantly pushing each other and you are consistently forced to better yourself - even if you don't have it within yourself, your environment makes you do it.
And that's one of the great things I love about this city. You don't have to do a thing and the city moves you, drives you, picks you up in its wave and just takes you. Very little energy is required because the city provides it for you. It's also sometimes overwhelming because you feel like you aren't doing enough to keep pace but if you trust it and you trust yourself, some amazing things can happen.
That being said - DAMN, i'm tired. I should probably write more in the mornings or afternoon when I actually have brain energy. Is that a real thing? Brain energy. I think it is. And I am low on it. Good night.
